Laser Hair Removal – Pre Care Instructions
How it works:
- Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a laser, or an intense, pulsed light to remove unwanted hair. During laser hair removal, light travels through the skin to an individual hair follicle (the target). Light converts heat and damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth.
- Treatments are done in a series of 6 to 10 treatments, at 4-12 week intervals.
- It is very important to keep to the interval schedule, as we are targeting the actively growing hair phase.
Before your treatment:
- The morning of the appointment shave the area to be treated.
- Most patients require 6 to 10 treatments, spaced 4-12 weeks apart, depending on the area of the body. All hairs are not in the same growth phase; only the hairs in the Anagen phase will allow the hair follicle to be destroyed. You can continue to shave or trim the areas being treated throughout your hair removal process.
- DO NOT tweeze or wax the area to be treated at least 6 weeks either prior to your first laser treatment, or throughout the duration of your laser hair removal procedures.
- DO NOT use depilatory creams during the duration of the treatment. (like Nair)
- DO NOT use self-tanning lotions, bronzers, tanning injections, and/or tanning booths 4 weeks prior to your laser treatment.
- DO NOT have any direct sun exposure two weeks prior to your appointment.
Treatment:
- Your clinician will verify the treatment area, current medications, pregnancy status, and sun exposure history.
- If you are on antibiotics for a current illness/infection, you will not be treated until you have been off of them for 10 days. Please reschedule if this occurs.
- Eye protection will be provided; it must be worn at all times during the laser treatment.
- A cool gel will be placed on the skin, in some treatments.
- You can expect a certain degree of discomfort during the treatment.
- Treatments will take 15 minutes to 1-hour area (depending).
- Your clinician will apply topical products and sunscreen after your treatment.
