Juvederm Voluma XC is a hyaluronic acid filler, used to smooth moderate to severe wrinkles and folds around the nose and mouth. Voluma is a dermal filler used to contour the cheeks and provide mid-face volume for up to 2 years. Voluma XC contains lidocaine, providing maximum comfort during the procedure.
What is Juvederm Voluma XC used for?
JUVÉDERM® Voluma XC filler addresses facial volume loss due to the normal aging process especially in the cheek and mid-face areas giving you the youthful contour. Injected deep into the facial tissue, it smooths wrinkles and folds by temporarily adding volume and structure. The treatment gives subtle but remarkable long lasting effects. What is Juvederm Voluma XC?
JUVÉDERM® Voluma XC is a colorless hyaluronic acid injectable gel. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar found in the human body. The role of hyaluronic acid in the skin is to deliver nutrients, hydrate the skin by holding in water, and to act as a cushioning agent. The product has a small amount of lidocaine mixed in for an anesthetic effect, improving the comfort of the injection.
Who is/is not a good candidate for Juvederm Voluma XC?
Nearly all adults are great candidates for filler injections. Do not have the treatment is you have:
- Severe allergies with a history of anaphylaxis
- Presence of multiple severe allergies
- History of allergies to lidocaine or Gram-positive bacterial proteins
Where on the body can Juvederm Voluma XC be used?
The product is most often used in facial tissues to add volume and lift sagging skin, adding youthful volume and contours to the cheek and midface. This product may be used in various areas of the face. Your provider will talk to you about overall correction options and which fillers will work for your specific goals.
How does Juvederm Voluma XC work?
Facial fillers like JUVÉDERM® Voluma XC work by placing a smooth, long lasting gel deep in the tissue. It acts much like your natural, youthful fat pads (which degrade as we age) over the bony facial structures. The JUVÉDERM® Voluma XC product also attracts moisture to the area adding to the overall volume and lift.
Is Juvederm Voluma XC painful?
Great question!
Although you may experience some discomfort during and after the injection treatment, the JUVÉDERM® Voluma XC injectable gel does contain lidocaine (an anesthetic) to reduce injection site pain. Your provider may choose to numb topically numb the treatment area with a cream applied directly on the injection areas to further minimize discomfort. Most experience minimal discomfort.
During the treatment, you can expect a feeling of pressure, not pain, as the gel is injected. You may hear sounds as the needle passes through the various levels of the facial tissues. Sometimes the sounds are like popping and/or crunching. This is totally normal. If at any time during the treatment you want a break or feel lightheaded tell your provider.
How long is the Juvederm Voluma XC appointment?
The treatment itself is brief. Depending upon the areas to be addressed and the number of syringes of product used, the actual injections may take from 15 minutes to 1 hour. If you use a topical numbing cream before treatment that process may add 20-45 minutes to the appointment.
How long does Juvederm Voluma XC last?
Correction with injectable fillers is temporary; the product naturally brakes down and is absorbed by the body over time. The results are immediate and JUVÉDERM® Voluma XC is a long-lasting product. The effects are proven to last up to two years. Touch-up injections and repeat injections are usually needed to maintain optimal correction. With regular touch-ups, less material (about half the amount) is usually needed for repeat injections.
How many treatments do I need of Juvederm Voluma XC?
Only one treatment is needed to achieve optimal results but the correction is temporary. The product is naturally broken down and absorbed by the body over time. Touch-up injections (maybe once per year) as well as repeat injections are usually needed to maintain your optimal outcome. But with repeat injections, usually less material (about half the amount) is needed.
How do I prepare for my Juvederm Voluma XC appointment?
Prior to the appointment you or the provider will remove all makeup. The skin is prepped with a topical antiseptic to prevent the introduction of bacteria during the injections.
What should I do or expect post Juvederm Voluma XC treatment?
Avoid strenuous exercise, extensive sun or heat exposure (like hot tubs or saunas), and alcoholic beverages for 24 hours. This is important to prevent temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the injection sites. You may place an ice pack over any swollen areas. Ask your provider when makeup can be applied after your treatment.
What are the common risks, side effect or concerns of Juvederm Voluma XC?
Your provider will review your full medical history to determine any potential rule outs to the treatment. The main ones are:
- Severe allergies marked by a history of anaphylaxis
- History or presence of multiple severe allergies
- History of allergies to lidocaine or Gram-positive bacterial proteins
Although side effects are rare and most are mild or moderate in nature, if any occur the duration is short, lasting 7 days or less. The most common side effects are temporary injection site redness, pain or tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration.
