If you’re reading this blog, you are likely interested in one of the fastest growing trends in aesthetic medicine, facial fillers. Just in 2017, over 2.6 million soft tissue filler injections were performed in the U.S. and the number is increasing year over year. This comprehensive list of hyaluronic acid, collagen and synthetic dermal fillers will help you navigate the muddy waters of aesthetic medicine.
For clarification, Botox® and Dermal Fillers are completely different and are easily confused. Botox is used to inhibit muscle receptors, which stops wrinkles from forming when making facial features. Wrinkle fillers, on the other hand are used to enhance or smooth facial features. Fillers are used to “fill” in areas where fat pads have separated in the face, due to aging or to simply give a “lift” in desired areas.
The most popular dermal fillers are naturally derived and fall into the hyaluronic acid and collagen categories.
- Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body, and over time is re-absorbed or metabolized back into the body. It is found in the dermis of the skin and retains water, allowing the skin to look healthy and smooth.
- Collagen fillers are slightly tougher and thicker than hylauronic wrinkle fillers and are either human or bovine derived and are found in the joints and connective tissue.
- Synthetic dermal fillers are created in a laboratory and therefore typically last longer, due to the inability of the body to naturally metabolize the substance. This can be both a positive and a negative, because if an injection is misplaced, the results are semi-permanent and not easily dissolved.
Below is are lists of available dermal fillers in the United States, along with their RealSelf rating score. The higher the score, the higher the satisfaction rating of those who have tried the fillers. RealSelf is a non-biased aesthetic review company that compiles the reviews of thousands of users to give a comprehensive overview of common aesthetic procedures.
