Frequently Asked Questions – Tumescent Liposuction
Am I a good candidate for liposuction?
You should be in good health and free of medical conditions such as diabetes, untreated high blood pressure, significant heart disease or blood clotting disorders.
How do we accumulate fat?
Fat is naturally and genetically acquired. As young adults, we usually accumulate fatty deposits that are inherited from our parents, as well as excess fat from a less-active lifestyle and aging in general. Liposuction allows you to change the dynamic–to no longer have to live with fat that displeases you.
And, as with buttock and breast augmentation, your fat can be used to your advantage, allowing you to do what women throughout the ages have always wished: to literally move fat from areas you don’t like to areas that need enhancement. For example, fat can be removed from the stomach area and injected elsewhere.
What can I expect during my tumescent liposuction procedure?
You will receive some medication beforehand to relax you. Your physician then will slowly inject a numbing solution into the areas of excess fat that are to be removed. Finally, a thin hollow rod of stainless steel–known as a cannula–will be used to remove the now numbed fat and reshape your body.
Will I need sutures with tumescent liposuction or fat transfer?
While modern tumescent liposuction generally allows the tiny wounds to remain open, Dr. Shuell may place fine absorbable sutures to close wounds that he deems non-essential to healing. This results in a finer, nearly invisible scar. Dr. Shuell reserves these sutures for skin regions that might otherwise be difficult to disguise or conceal the tiny “access points” for your liposuction.
Why should I work with Dr. Shuell?
Dr. Shuell is one of only four physicians nationwide who is Double Board-Certified as a specialist in both Obstetrics & Gynecology and Cosmetic Plastic Surgery. This unique combination has given Dr. Shuell a deep understanding of the fatty areas of a woman’s body, of the need to restore proper proportion, symmetry and balance–and to be certain the areas being lipo-contoured will result in a pleasing and natural appearance.
Can liposuction be used to reduce my breast size?
Dr. Shuell’s liposuction is an outstanding alternative to a typical “reduction mammaplasty” that involves major surgery, with significant recovery time, discomfort, scarring and cost. Dr. Shuell’s “Scarless Breast Reduction” is a way to reduce the size, volume and weight of the breasts of a woman of any age, though it is ideal for the young woman with unusually large breasts or the woman with excessive volume that has developed over time.
The breasts retain their rounded shape and contour and the skin typically retracts nicely around the reduced breast tissues. The breasts, now free of excess fatty weight, typically rise to a more normal position, becoming “perkier.” And, because only the fat is removed, sparing the glandular milk-producing architecture of the breasts, nursing is unaffected.
When may I resume normal activities after the procedure?
All regular day-to-day activities may be resumed almost immediately. With the exception of impact exercise–like jogging and contact sports–you may walk, fast-walk, use free and fixed weights and stretch the day after your procedure. Unlike other forms of surgery, liposuction allows you to get back to normal as soon as you wish. Patients should wait seven days before swimming.
The limiting guideline is likely to be soreness; your body heals itself over time. The soreness typically is most obvious for the first three to seven days. Analgesics (pain killers) are prescribed, but often just two Advil, Aleve or other mild anti-inflammatory medications provide relief and allow you to stay active.
What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
The Brazilian Butt Lift is an extremely popular procedure that involves both tumescent liposuction and the transfer of fat to the buttocks area for a voluptuous and curvy look. Many patients specifically ask for this procedure.
