The tumescent technique with local anesthesia involves the injection of large volumes of very dilute lidocaine (local anesthetic) and epinephrine (drug that shrinks capillaries) into subcutaneous fat. With the tumescent technique, the volume of dilute lidocaine injected into fat is so large that the targeted areas become swollen and firm. The tumescent technique produces profound and long-lasting local anesthesia of the skin and subcutaneous fat preventing pain during and after treatment. This eliminates the need for general anesthesia, sedation or prescription pain medications.

Generally tumescent liposuction is not painful. You will may receive medication beforehand to relax you during the procedure. Your physician then will slowly inject a numbing solution into the areas of excess fat that are to be removed. There is no need for general anesthesia, sedation or pain medications.
